Dental practitioners have increased emphasis on preventive screenings and treatment to maintain oral health, but some estimates indicate that upwards of 70% of U.S. adults have some form of periodontal (gum) disease. According to two recent studies, the severe form of gum disease may have an even more concrete connection to heart disease, and tooth loss caused by periodontal disease may just be the most likely indicator of heart disease related to gum health. Find Out Why Having Straight Teeth Matters

September 17, 2015

Beautiful braces for straight teeth at any ageWhen braces were first offered, all orthodontic work was considered cosmetic dentistry. As years passed, correcting certain malocclusions (dental misalignments) was considered necessary. This included especially problematic over, under, and crossbite that impeded natural speech and chewing capabilities. Eventually, dentists noticed that patients with straighter teeth tended to have healthier smiles and encounter fewer problems with tooth decay. At this point, traditional braces were considered non-cosmetic. It’s no secret that straighter teeth look better, but the surprising truth is that they are actually healthier. Call the dentist Fort Lauderdale residents rely on, Kodish Dental Group, to find out more about orthodontic treatments to straighten out your smile.

Laser Whitening from Your Fort Lauderdale Dentist

Laser whitening is an in-office treatment that involves applying whitening gel to the teeth, and using a laser to catalyze the chemical reaction that removes stains from teeth. The chemical reaction caused by the laser usually causes bubbling or foaming as the gel penetrates the enamel removing deep-set stains. After the laser is applied to each tooth to speed whitening time, the gel will remain on teeth for a short period of time before being removed to reveal your brilliant, flawless smile.

Zoom! Whitening Takes Teeth from Dull to Brilliant in About an Hour

Zoom! whitening works in much the same way that laser whitening works. Rather than applying a laser to catalyze the reaction between tooth and bleaching agent, Zoom! treatment utilizes a special, ultra-violet light. After the gel is placed on your teeth, the light will be set to advance the whitening process for about an hour. After treatment with Zoom! patients notice results up to 10 shades lighter in just one visit. Zoom! is one of the most effective teeth whitening treatments on the market for brilliant whitening results in a single appointment.

At-Home Whitening With Professional Grade Results

For patients who prefer to whiten teeth gradually or who would rather whiten at home, we recommend allowing us to create customized application trays to fit your teeth. Regular over the counter trays will not fit as snugly allowing the whitening agent to affect soft tissue, and exposure to oxygen makes the agent less effective. Our customized trays will seal tightly to ensure optimal treatment, and the professional grade bleaching gel we provide will whiten much more effectively than traditional over the counter whitening strips and gels.

Stop Snoring and Sleep Apnea, Fort Lauderdale

June 17, 2015

Snoring man - couple in bed

If you wake feeling exhausted, keep the house up all night snoring, or wake feeling short of breath you may be struggling with sleep apnea. 1 in 25 adult men and 1 in 50 adult women in the United States suffers from sleep apnea, the cessation of breath during sleep. While sleep apnea often goes untreated for years, it can be detrimental to patients who are unable to complete the restorative sleep cycle. Don’t take sleep apnea lying down, call the Kodish Dental Group to schedule a snoring consultation and find out how to stop snoring.

Sleep Apnea Defined by Your Fort Lauderdale Dentist

Sleep apnea is the repeated cessation of breathing throughout the night. Patients who suffer from sleep apnea can stop breathing 100s of times a night, or stop breathing for extended periods of time (up to a minute) throughout the night. There are two main types of sleep apnea, central and obstructive. Central sleep apnea (CSA) occurs when the brain does not signal the body to breathe, and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) occurs when the airway is blocked. OSA is far more common, and some patients even experience a combination of both types of apnea.

Do you Have Sleep Apnea, Fort Lauderdale?

The best way to determine whether you’re suffering from sleep apnea is to schedule a consultation with one of our skilled dentists or a local sleep specialist, but there are several warning signs you should be aware of. Excessive daytime tiredness is the most common symptom no matter what type of sleep apnea you suffer from. There are numerous tests available to help you determine whether your daytime sleepiness is severe enough to warrant a sleep study. Try performing an internet search for “excessive daytime sleepiness test.” Answer the test questions honestly to get a good indication of your level of exhaustion. Other signs and symptoms of sleep apnea include:

  • Morning headaches
  • Dry mouth or sore throat upon waking
  • Awakening throughout the night out of breath
  • Snoring and wheezing while sleeping
  • Gastro-esophageal Reflux Disorder (GERD) often called acid reflux
  • Mood alterations like depression, loss of concentration and memory impairment

What’s a Sleep Study?

A sleep study uses electrodes and video and audio monitoring to allow physicians to record the number and duration of sleep apnea and hypopnea incidences. Apnea is the complete cessation of breathing whereas hypopnea is the shortening of breath. The test looks for the number of incidences of apnea and hypopnea per hour known as the Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI). Mild sleep apnea suffers can have results as low as 5 AHI, but many patients have a score of 30 AHI or higher indicating severe apnea.

Cure Sleep Apnea Call Your Fort Lauderdale Dentist

Patients who suffer from OSA don’t have to live with sleepless nights and exhausted days, a simple dental appliance from the Kodish Dental Group can help you sleep soundly. The most commonly prescribed treatment for both CSA and OSA is a Constant Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) system, but many patients find it more difficult to sleep with the loud, uncomfortable mask. Using a night guard to shift the lower jaw forward and open the airway is often a less invasive cure for patients with OSA.

Find Out More

If you’ve been recently diagnosed with OSA, are treating your OSA with a CPAP, or you think you may have sleep apnea, call your trusted dentists at the Kodish Dental Group to find out more about how we can help you sleep through the night.
