TMJ Disorder Causes
Are you suffering from jaw pain? TMJ stands for the temporomandibular joint, the jaw joint. This joint is where the lower and upper jawbones join in front of the ear. The lower jawbone pivots against a pad of cartilage which protects the surface of both jawbones and keeps them separated from each other. Muscles are connected to these bones and nerves run in and round the whole area.
Below are a few reasons that may be your cause of TMJ pain.
- Excessive Wear
- Grinding of Teeth
- Jaw Clenching
- Bite Misalignment
When cartilage becomes too worn or damaged it will start making popping or clicking sounds as it moves back and forth, shifting in and out of alignment. Thus pressure is placed on the nerves nearby which stretches or compresses them, causing pain.
Misalignment of the TMJ
If the meeting of the lower and upper bones is altered, whether from being slightly misaligned at birth, being dislocated or from any sort of injury, this leaves the joint in a perpetual state of strain as it tries to find its properly-aligned at-rest position.
Discomfort and pain in other parts of the body may also be the result of TMJ. Blurry vision, chronic sore throats, swallowing problems, sinus infections, stomach trouble, earaches and ringing in the ears may all be accompanied by headaches and traced back to a TMJ problem.
TMJ headaches are often not correctly diagnosed, or perhaps not diagnosed at all, just medicated. So it might be many years before the person finds a doctor or dentist who finally pinpoints the cause of their years of migraines as being in the TMJ.
